What is LEED ?
LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the most recognized and respected rating system for the design, construction and operation green buildings. developed by the US Construction, Existing Building Operations and Maintenance, as well as, Commercial Interiors.
How does the LEED rating system work ?
A building achieves LEED certification by fulfilling prerequisites and achieving points in five categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials and Resources and Indoor Environmental Quality. The levels of certification and points required are: 40+ for Certified, 50+ for Gold, 60+ for Silver and 80+ earns Platinum.
Why is LEED important ?
Green construction is THE EMMERGING MARKET. According to McGraw-Hill Construction’s Green Outlook 2009: Trends Driving Change report, “The value of green building construction starts was up five-fold from 2005 to 2008 (from $10 billion to $36-$49 billion), and could triple by 2013, reaching $96-$140 billion.
LEED is becoming THE GREEN STANDARD. Whether targeting certification or not, more cities, including Philadephia, are incorporating LEED standards into their Requests for Proposals and Contracts.
LEED is THE BRAND NAME FOR GREEN. A LEED certified building is synonymous with lower energy costs, superior indoor environmental quality, higher lease rates, greater worker productivity and respect for enviromental stewardship.
